Dr. Loudon offers a
series of in-office glycolic acid washes in combination with a
physician-formulated at home skin care regimen. Glycolic acid, the acid of
sugarcane, is one of several Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's). It works by
removing the outer, dead layer of skin called the Stratum Corneum. The
younger, healthier cells beneath are then exposed and a more youthful appearance
restored. Topical
oxygen treatments stimulate skin cells to reproduce more of their energy source
(a molecule called ATP). With continued use cells achieve an energy level
similar to that of young cells.
Our
physician-strength, pure glycolic therapy products
will:
 |
Increase the
thickness of the top, living layer (epidermis) -- This rejuvenates skin by
restoring texture and vitality to the skin surface. |
 |
Decrease the
thickness of the outer, dead cell layer (stratum corneum) -- This
corrects the dull, sallow look of the skin, improving clarity and
brightness, which results in a more even toned complexion. Although no
treatment can claim to truly shrink pores, our regimen unclogs the pores (by
exfoliating the dead cells) and makes them appear smaller. |
 |
Increase the
water-trapping elements (glycosaminoglycans) in the deep layer of our skin
-- When water content is replenished, skin hydration increases, smoothing
the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. |
Many patients want
to know if this treatment is the same as a chemical peel. This differs
from a chemical peel because traditional chemical peels are performed with much
stronger chemicals called trichloracetic acid (TCA) or phenol. They remove
much more of the skin surface and result in crust formation, with definate
peeling of the skin. Glycolic acid, when applied in the physician's office
is a "wash" procedure where the outer dead layers come off and there
is less overt peeling.
The glycolic wash
procedure is combined with our Oxygen Hydrating Gel Mask treatment and usually
takes about twenty minutes.
The restoration of
a more youthful skin tone occurs gradually throughout the treatment period,
which consists of a series of washes (usually 6) at one to two week intervals
and then a maintenance wash every 4 to 8 weeks. After the procedure,
make-up can be applied, allowing you to return to work or other activities.
